Largo Medical Center Medical Education Program Set to Expand
Largo Medical Center received the formal approval from the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and the American College of Osteopathic Neurologists and Psychiatrists to begin training physicians in the field of psychiatry beginning in 2012.
LARGO, FL — The Psychiatry residency was approved for a total of eight residents for a four-year program.
“This psychiatry residency program is a natural complement to the patient care services our hospital already provides,” said Richard Satcher, CEO of Largo Medical Center. “With Largo Medical Center’s 31 bed psychiatric crisis stabilization unit, our 14 bed voluntary unit known as The Retreat, and numerous outpatient and community partners, we provide a strong clinical environment to teach residents.”
Satcher has also announced the selection of Ashok M. Patel, M.D. as the Psychiatry Residency Program Director. Dr. Patel is a Diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and has been in practice in our local community for more than 17 years. Dr. Patel will be joined by Nihal Shah, M.D., Hector Corzo, M.D. and Andrea Chamberlain, M.D. as well as other psychiatrists who practice at Largo Medical Center’s Behavioral Medicine units.
“My faculty members and I are looking forward to the commencement of the psychiatry residency program. We are eager to provide clinical expertise in Largo Medical Center’s academic and clinical environment which supports both patient care and resident learning.” — Ashok M. Patel, M.D., Director of the Psychiatry Resident Program
Largo Medical Center has been training medical residents in a variety of residency programs from primary care to critical care, for more than 3 years. The Psychiatry Residency Program will be the thirteenth residency program the hospital offers. Once all 8 psychiatry residency positions are filled, the hospital will have approximately 130 residents in training. The following residency programs are currently available at Largo Medical Center: Anesthesia, Dermatology, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Orthopedics, General Surgery, Traditional Internship as well as fellowships in Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Pulmonary/ Critical Care and Rheumatology. The addition of the Psychiatry Residency Program is another example of the commitment Largo Medical Center has made to educate and train physicians for the future to meet the healthcare care needs of our community, state and nation.
