Dr. Oliva Named CMO for Borgess Health




Anthony F. Oliva, DO, MMM, CPE, has accepted the position of Chief Medical Officer for Borgess Health, effective March 28, 2011.

Kalamazoo, MI — Dr. Oliva will be accountable for the clinical practice of medicine across all Borgess Health entities, including ambulatory care, hospital care and extended care services.

Dr. Oliva most recently served as Chief Medical Officer for the not-for-profit Guthrie Health System based in Sayre, PA. The organization includes Robert Packer Hospital, a tertiary care teaching hospital and trauma center, as well as two community hospitals, home care and hospice services, and the Guthrie Clinic — a multi-specialty group practice of more than 260 physicians and 130 mid-level providers.

At Guthrie, Dr. Oliva has been responsible for development and implementation of widespread improvements in the quality and safety of patient care, as well as in the efficiency of that care.

Previously, Dr. Oliva was Chief Medical Officer for Wellmont Health System, a four-hospital system in northeastern Tennessee and southwestern Virginia. At Wellmont, he led implementation of a highly successful patient safety initiative, which included an alliance with two other regional health systems.

Dr. Oliva also served as Vice President of Medical Affairs for Bayhealth Medical Center — with facilities in central and southern Delaware — as well as Vice President of Medical Affairs for Olean General Hospital in Olean, NY, and Chief Medical Officer for the Seneca Nation of Indians.

Prior to assuming medical leadership positions, Dr. Oliva served patients in family practice, including care for the families of service members of the US Air Force.

Dr. Oliva received his medical education at the University of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, IA. He served an internship at Westview Hospital, Indianapolis, IN, and his residency in Family Practice at Saginaw Cooperative Hospital, Saginaw, MI. He was Chief Resident at Saginaw Cooperative Hospital. He is board certified in family practice.

Dr. Oliva received a Masters in Medical Management from Carnegie Mellon University Heinz School of Public Policy & Management.  He is a Certified Physician Executive, a designation earned from the American College of Physician Executives.

Among the honors bestowed on Dr. Oliva is a Friend of Nursing Award received at Robert Packer Hospital.
